It is not often that furniture makes you sigh because it is so beautiful but the Tulip table and its matching chairs fall into this all-too-small category. Somehow both Space Age and essentially organic, they are among the most instantly recognisable of 20th-century design icons. Created in 1956, the range aimed to liberate traditional furniture from what designer Eero Saarinen described as the “slum of legs” by instead utilising an elegant, central stem that prompted the adoption of the Tulip name.
